But once a year, a crowd of excited patrons once a year shines a spotlight on this otherwise dark corner of town.
Tucked under a historic brownstone, the Empire State Pet Shop is preparing for its annual Turtle Adoption Extravaganza.
And this year’s event is set to be a real doozy.
The pet shop plans to adopt a record 10,000 Turtles to homes across the globe.

While this event seems to be bringing out the best in the city, it’s hard to ignore the backdrop of rising crime.
